IMPACTIVE celebrates its second annual meeting in Cagliari

After our second year of collaboration, the IMPACTIVE project partners have celebrated their second general assembly in Cagliari, hosted by the Italian partner CSGI. The discussions focused on setting our priorities for the next two years, as well as sharing the progress we have made over the past year.

IMPACTIVE is already celebrating its second anniversary! This means we’ve just held our second annual meeting, this time in Cagliari, Italy, hosted by the Italian project partner, CSGI. We spent three highly productive days and returned home with fresh perspectives and innovative ideas. The discussions covered the latest developments from the various teams, including our progress on patent protection. Looking ahead, we have set our priorities to ensure we meet our objectives over the remaining two years of the project.

During the first 12 months of the IMPACTIVE project, funded by the European Commission through the Horizon Europe framework, the various teams worked on developing innovative mechanochemical methods for the manufacture of key Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients.

This year, we have exceeded our expectations by successfully synthesising five different APIs, replacing all solvent-based steps with mechanochemical methods. These synthetic pathways target two distinct families of compounds. We are also looking into methods to protect the results we’ve fought so long to obtain. The result: four different patents at various stages of progress, with a fifth one on the way!

Now that we have reached the halfway point of the project, an important question we addressed at the Cagliari meeting was setting our priorities. We’ve made significant progress, but there is still much to do, and only two years remain. Channelling our efforts is crucial to achieving all our objectives. We also need to begin scaling up the lab-level results and redouble our efforts in stakeholder engagement.

“I wish to thank you for the fruitful and positive attitude you have demonstrated over these two years, as well as for your commitment and enthusiasm,” said Evelina Colacino, the coordinator of IMPACTIVE and a researcher at the University of Montpellier, France, at the end of the meeting.

Let’s continue shaping the future of mechanochemistry!
